Summary

The concert took place at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, a leading cultural venue opened in 1991. Renowned for its excellent acoustics, the theatre hosts opera, concerts and stage productions of the highest level, and is home to the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, making it a benchmark for music and the arts in southern Spain.

If one trait unites Fahmi Alqhai and Patricia Guerrero, it is their determination to carry Andalusia’s musical and dance traditions into the future. In Origen, they take that task to its ultimate conclusion. They set out to uncover the seeds bequeathed to us by the Spanish Golden Age, sown within flamenco through genres such as jácaras, passacaglias, marionas and zarabandas, whose rhythms and baroque guitar rasgueados bear unmistakable traces of their historical legacy.

The creative partnership between Guerrero and Alqhai goes back to the innovative show Paraíso Perdido. In their new show, Origen – la semilla de los tiempos, the Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, the formidable Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía and the versatile, large line-up of Accademia del Piacere join forces in a co-production: a true constellation of stars of historical music and the most avant-garde flamenco.

Origen draws on our history and travels through it from past to present and back again. This rhapsody in seven acts projects into the 21st century the force of the genesis of these dances. The stage power of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía and the historical yet avant-garde sounds of Accademia del Piacere will be guided by the creative sensibility of these two great artists of our time.

Programme notes

Origen. La semilla de los tiempos is described as a rhapsody in seven acts that seeks to project into the 21st century the primal force behind the origins of Andalusian dance and tradition. The show brings together two key figures in contemporary culture: Fahmi Alqhai, an internationally renowned figure in historical music and the experimental avant-garde, and Patricia Guerrero, winner of the 2021 National Dance Award (Premio Nacional de Danza) and director of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía.

he artistic concept delves into the Spanish Golden Age to uncover the seeds that genres such as jácaras, passacaglias, marionas and zarabandas sowed in flamenco. These musical forms bear historical witness to rhythmic patterns and baroque guitar rasgueados that have endured to this day. The show not only draws on history but moves through it, travelling from past to present in an ongoing dialogue between dance and early music.
