Fandangos – Gugurumbé
Composers: Traditional, Santiago de Murcia (1673-1739) and Fahmi Alqhai
In this videotrack Rocío Márquez sings a present-day traditional fandango, which Fahmi Alqhai continues with his viola da gamba version of a superb fandango by the guitarist Santiago de Murcia, published in the early 18th century. The piece is part of a programme in which Accademia del Piacere takes to Germany a concert version of “Gugurumbé”, a stage show inspired by the influence of Africa and the Americas on Spanish Baroque music.

Lyrics
El merengue tiene el dengue,
el jaleo tiene meneo,
cantemos alto el fandango,
y que resuene el pandero
de nuestro regio Fernando.
Cuando un negro se enamora
de una blanca de Castilla
le da el oro del Perú
y todo aquello que tiene
cantando este bululú.
Dos negritas con un blanco
se pusieron a bailar
la nochebuena en la plaza,
con aplauso universal,
¡y se olvidaron de razas!
The merengue has the fever,
the jaleo has the swing,
let us sing the fandango loud
and let the tambourine resound
for our royal Ferdinand.
When a black man falls in love
with a white woman from Castile,
he gives her the gold of Peru
and everything he owns,
singing this bululú.
Two black girls and a white man
began to dance
on Christmas Eve in the square,
to everyone’s applause,
and forgot all about race!
