Passacaille (‘Armide’, 1686)

Composer: Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687). Arrangement: Fahmi Alqhai.

French operas ended with a passacaille or chaconne, a piece built on a repeated bass. To close the suite from Alcione, Alqhai arranges for viol consort the passacaille from Armide, a classic opera of the French Baroque repertoire by its most illustrious composer, the Gallicised Florentine Jean-Baptiste Lully.
