Niña y viña

Composer: Anonymous

Although written for four voices, Niña y viña is another of the typical villancicos of the Spanish Renaissance for which the Cancionero de la Colombina is a key source: the last line of each stanza serves as a refrain, its theme is typically amorous, and its Italian equivalents are the villanelle and pastorelle.

Lyrics

Niña y viña
peral y havar,
malo es de guardar.

Levantéme, o madre,
mañanita trida,
fuy cortar la rosa,
la rosa florida.
Malo es de guardar.

Viñadero malo
prenda me pedía,
dile yo un cordone
de la mi camisa.
Malo es de guardar.

Viñadero malo
prenda me demanda;
yo dile una cinta
de la muy delgada.
Malo es de guardar.

A girl and a vineyard,
a pear tree and a bean field
are hard to guard.

I rose, oh mother,
early one morning,
I went to cut the rose,
the rose in bloom.
They are hard to guard.

The wicked vine-keeper
asked me for a token;
I gave him a cord
from my shift.
They are hard to guard.

The wicked vine-keeper
demands a token of me;
I gave him a ribbon,
a very fine one.
They are hard to guard.
