In their new CD for Glossa, Cantar de Amor, Fahmi Alqhai and Accademia del Piacere join forces with fellow Sevillian Juan Sancho – one of today’s leading tenors in Baroque opera – for an impressive journey through 17th-century Spanish theatre music, with the great Juan Hidalgo as the featured composer. A central figure at the Spanish court of the time, he set to music the excellent texts of Calderón de la Barca, in close collaboration with him.
The sparkling instrumental music of Spain at the time, in the ever-impressive versions of Alqhai and his musicians, frames Hidalgo’s tonos (songs): marionas, chaconas, pasacalles and other rhythms that so often came from the Spanish-American territories, as Juan Ramón Lara explains in his introductory text.
