To sing in tribute to Mars
I tuned my viola and shaped my verse.
But it will only sound with kisses
and will only make art of love.
On the cover, a soldier faints and falls against his shield. He has been defeated, not by the enemy but by Love. On its new CD, Accademia del Piacere sings with Monteverdi of the victories of Venus over Mars: not even the fierce Tancredi of the Combattimento will enjoy his triumph before Cupid inflicts the final defeat on him. Fahmi Alqhai’s Accademia thus returns to its most cherished territory, the Italian Seicento, to bring us, together with Juan Sancho and Mariví Blasco, its impassioned vision of that seminal masterpiece by Monteverdi. With the most sensitive attention to poetry, the beginning and end of the Cremonese composer’s music, Fahmi Alqhai and his large ensemble of musicians conquer War, travelling from violence to tenderness, from the most unbridled impetus to the most rapt ecstasy. This meticulous edition is completed by Spanish literary versions – created for this release by the poet Manuel García – of Tasso’s verses, the Lamento della Ninfa and the other poems set to music by Monteverdi.
