The Bach Album
15,00 €
One of the challenges facing a viola da gamba virtuoso today is the search for new and demanding solo repertoire with which to demonstrate their technical and interpretative skills, especially given that the source of new material gradually dried up over the course of the Baroque… One of the solutions Alqhai proposes is the entirely legitimate resource of transcription, and in the tour de force that is The Bach Album, the viola da gamba player presents four such adaptations – all made by himself – of Bach’s masterpieces for solo instruments.
Taking advantage of the fact that the viola da gamba is a “mixed” instrument, capable of playing harmonies and melodic lines at the same time, Alqhai has adapted the Violin Sonata No. 2 and the Cello Suite No. 4, as well as the Flute Partita. And he has added the dazzling – and inexhaustible – Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2. Alqhai has often chosen this piece to close his concerts, and this recording, made at Sputnik Studios in Seville, clearly shows how live performance has gradually shaped the interpretation.
That these transcriptions sound as if they had been written for the viola da gamba is, of course, a tribute to Bach’s genius. But it also reflects the naturalness and communicative intensity that are the hallmark of Fahmi Alqhai’s musical thinking and performances.
