Nunca fue pena mayor – Colombina
Composer: Juan de Urrede (c. 1430 – after 1482)
The Flemish composer Juan de Urrede, or Johannes de Wreede (c. 1430 – after 1482), spent much of his life in Spain. This song, the most famous of his works, survives in many 15th-century manuscripts; indeed, its fourth voice here is based on the one preserved in the Verona manuscript (Italy).
Lyrics
Nunca fue pena mayor
ni tormento tan estraño,
que iguale con el dolor
que resçibo del engaño.
Y este conosçimiento
faze mis dias tan tristes,
en pensar el pensamiento
que por amores me distes.
Y me faze por mejor
la muerte con menor daño
que el tormento y el dolor
que resçibo del engaño.
Never was there greater sorrow
nor torment so strange
as could match the pain
that I receive from deceit.
And this knowledge
makes my days so sad,
thinking of the thought
you gave me for love.
And it makes death, with lesser harm,
seem better to me
than the torment and the pain
that I receive from deceit.
